DESCRIPTION
Mycolic acids are a class of long chain α-alkyl-β-hydroxy fatty acids which constitute a significant part of the outer membrane bilayer of Mycobacteria. Due to their ability to fold in a zipper like structure they form an impenetrable and highly apolar layer. Mycolic acids have various functions and are vital for the survival and pathogenesis of mycobacteria.
Cis methoxy mycolic acid-azide features an α-methyl methoxy unit and a cis cyclopropane ring. Additionally, the cyclopropane is functionalized with an azide, connected via a short aliphatic linker. The azide allows for a wide range of functionalizations using click chemistry, enabling many different applications, such as surface functionalization.
